Ife and, to a lesser extent, Owo, seriously impressed me with their sculptures. Are there any other pre-colonial styles(any art form) of similar quality or at least goodness? I've yet to read up on the doings of Cushites too much, so I imagine I'm missing some stuff there.

While not exactly impressive, I found myself to be quite fond of Benin's masquerades.
>>
>>18442257
Art is not supposed to be technically impressive to be appreciated. That's why white supremacist retards are always artistically illiterate and only like neoclassical kitsch slop.
>>
>>18442258
True, but the best art is always technically impressive in at least one area.
>>
I like benin bronzes
>>
>>18442278
Yes, I think you got a point.
But sometimes the exceptionality is within an area of technique of that's not valued enough by the larger public, and that's a shame.

How come most African art is sculpted instead of painted? Nothing wrong with it, just something I've noticed.

How can you read this racist cesspit of a board as a black guy? Are you immune to all the racist bs here?
>>
>>18442827
Maybe something to do with the environment? Sculptures tend to be more durable. I imagine it's something like why carpets are popular with nomads, it's art you can take with you on road because it isn't heavy and it can be used for comfort.

>Art is not supposed to be

According to who?

>technically impressive to be appreciated.

If it's not technically impressive then it's ubiquitous and taken for granted. Like stick figures.

Now, maybe you can argue that an arrangement of stick figures in some specific context can convey some profound meaning or something, but then I wouldn't call that technically unimpressive.

A lot of African art isn't actually considered art in Africa but serves a purely functional purpose. Foreigners come and look at it or even buy it, but it's like the equivalent of a tourist in America taking home a stop sign. Sure, there's some aesthetic value in a stop sign maybe, but that's not the point of it.

Benin's sculptures are pretty lame IMHO. They did inspire Owo though...

I don't actually come to /his/ often, I'm usually on /int/, /mu/, and /x/. There are enough people who take an interest in African history and topics and defend it from chuds for it not to be a major issue.

Gorsky was unironically right when he said that if you killed all homosexuals fascism would disappear, all the art you polfaces salivate over is a bunch of muscular men in various poses

He should've just added ''closeted'' before homosexuals

i recently found out about the igbo-ukwu site from the 10th century or so in nigeria. there doesn't seem to be much information out there but it contained probably the most elaborate and detailed artwork i've seen in west africa.

i NEVER see anyone talk about this site and i only found out about it while reading about nok culture on wikipedia.

many artifacts also incorporate imported glass beads from the middle east

i like hausa architecture.
>>
>>18444812
i prefer it to the more standard sudano-sahelian cause it seems more varied and has way more decoration
>>
>>18444814
northern nigeria and niger where hausa live seems to have preserved a LOT more traditional architecture than southern nigeria.
i tried to look pictures of igbo obi some months ago and there was nothing modern. just old colonial pictures.

also, yes op i have a feeling somalia is a very underrated place at least when it comes to architecture. their building style seems similar to that of yemen so there should be plenty of qt hidden gems out there unfortunately the long running civil war, widespread poverty and destitution, colonization and low internet connectivity means there really isn't much photographic evidence out there and what you can find mostly shows dilapidated ruined buildings.
it's pretty sad desu. probably whatever heritage they have will soon be lost forever.

there are also all the swahili ruins along the east african coast
too bad many swahili cities were destroyed by the portuguese and the whole thing kinda collapsed after that
the great mosque of kilwa was apparently painted. wonder if any had tile decorations?

>>18442252
and if you include sudan with sub-saharan africa they had a lot of cool stuff before they were christianized
>pic are objects found by italian looter giuseppe ferlini in the pyramid of kandake amanishakheto after he blew it up
desu christian sudan is kinda lame imo besides some murals and so is islamic sudan.
probably would've been much better if they had been islamized at the same time as egypt that way probably some kino like fatimid and mamluk architecture could've developed there
