Pyroclastic flows are not an intuitive natural phenomenon. A 500-celsius ash cloud moving at 100 km/h on ground level incinerating everything in its path is something straight out of an apocalyptic tale. Granted these were more superstitious times so I guess that's why 80% were wise enough to evacuate
