Their services did not really change at all over the years, they simply scaled up their organization to open chapter houses in more locations. The primary thing they did which made them so wealthy was act as a banking service for the nobility going on crusade or pilgrimage, since they were virtually the only bank that operated in the Holy Land and in Europe simultaneously and would actually fight to protect you (and your money), which gave them a very good reputation. The Templars were in fact universally respected, until Philip's slander against them. And it was Slander. Philip obviously didn't believe a word of it because he actually tried to become a Templar himself, but refused to renounce his royal titles as the order required its noble members to do. Technically, the Templars were an order of "poor fellows" meaning they took oaths of poverty and could not hold land or titles in their own names. Philip wasn't willing to do this, obviously, so he became increasingly antagonistic toward the Templars even as his debt to them mounted.So yeah, very obviously a personal beef. The Templars rejected his bid for membership since he refused to take their sacred oaths, and he was massively in debt to them so his material reasons for doing what he did were greater even than simply the seizure of their assets. He was a scumbag.
