In the beginning nearly all the republics modelled themselves after the U.S in one way or another (the constitution more often than not). And it remained a strong role model for liberals because it was one of the world's strongest and most stable republics. Even if they obviously disliked their interventionism, slavery, filibustering, etc, etc. What really soured public opinion on the U.S was the war with Spain and soon after that the Panama affair; then all the Banana wars and so on.
