Calvinists win again
>>
That's a news. I thought they were Lutheran. But weren't the people pretty angry they converted to foreign religion ?

No they just didn't bother the Lutherans until 1817 when they forced the Lutherans to merge with the Calvinist church and a bunch of them went to the US in exile

Frederic the Great was more like a deist than a christian.

Some lutherans rejected this union and they split off.
They are the more "conservative" version of lutherans in Germany, for example they don't allow women priests even today and I think they don't marry homosexual but I'm not sure.
The mainstream german protestant church the EKD (the german protestant union church) is very pozzed. German catholic churches aren't any better.

The evangelical here stands for evangelisch (german for protestant) and not american fundamentalist evangelicalism. American evangelicals are called Evangelikale in german.

Yeah I only found out about this a few years ago too. And contrary to the common procedures of those times, the Hohenzollern of Brandenburg did not force their subjects to convert as would be allowed due to the Peace of Augsburg. But one should keep in mind that the Hohenzollern also had majority calvinist possessions in other parts of Germany.

There were some frictions. In the 17th century the Lutherans were very vocal about. In 1615 a riot broke out in Berlin as the brother (who was also the city-gouverneur) of the recently converted Prince-Elector Johann Sigismund tried to remove "papist" influences (altars, pictures and the likes) from the lutheran churches of Berlin. This led to an armed standoff between an angry mob and a few soldiers of the city garrison. Ultimately the Prince-Elector surpressed this riot without any explicit violence by ordering more soldiers into the city. Resentments continued to boil on a low flame until 1662 when a first Edict of Tolerance was issued, which forbade Lutherans to vocally and physically attack Calvinists. This one sided edict was of course not well liked and within the same year a council was to be held between the Calvinists and the Lutherans. This led to nothing and in 1664 another Edict of Tolerance was issued. Now the Calvinists too were prohibited from attacking the Lutherans but the Lutherans had to accept that their Confession was to be changed to not exclude Calvinists. The Lutherans weren't happy but Calvinism never took hold in Brandenburg or Prussia and remained a religion for the prussian court.

Brandenburg underwent the reformation in the 1530s and by the Peace of Augsburg in 1555 was officially Lutheran. The union of Brandenburg and Prussia would occur in 1618. The first alliance between the UK and Prussia came about in 1756. The first alliance between Russia and Prussia came about in 1764.

FUN FACT: Frederick the Great's father was a Calvinist, yes, but he was afraid of not being predestined to salvation, so he forbade his sons to be taught that.
Not sure if that would count as Calvinist

based on people I know IRL I'd make the following ranking:

Lutherans > Catholics > Calvinists and Jews

I mean there's that quote of him describing Christianity as being only believed by imbeciles.
