Why did the Japanese build such retarded ship designs?
>>
that looks fuckin sick
>>
What's wrong with it? It looks pretty good at what it was made to do.
>>
>>18446450
It basically couldn't sail anywhere beyond the coastline because its too fat to sail in the open sea.
>>
>>18446453
Why would they want to sail the open sea? They needed boats to reach the other Japanese islands, not to cross the ocean.

>>18446456
To expand nihon obviously
>>
>>18446458
That has historically gone very poorly

It's a warship, not a sailing ship.

Purpose built warships for the archipelago of Japan and the Korean coastline. As a warship in that timeframe it has loads of advantages, but mostly, it's tall as fuck. If it's taller than your opponent, you can shoot down on them from behind cover, thus you win. European style sails don't exist here either, so it's not like classic junks are somehow more maneuverable. Indeed, as my understanding, it's used similar to the Venetian gallasas, a floating firing platform. Proper Euro style cannon are rare on ships during this time in Japan as well, so being taller and more maneuverable basically guarantees victory. They get wrecked later because of cannon, not explicitly because the ship was a bad design for the restrictions in its design. If I remove correctly, the larger versions, like your image, actually proved to be very survivable, even against Korean guns, so not exactly that retarded at all

I thought the Japanese preferred boarding parties and that this was how Yi was able to pwn them so hard

Japan wasn't retarded they wer just following the SOP for East Asian naval warfare for 600 years: paddling around in tall fortress ships & bumping boats together and fighting siege warfare on the water. They're collectively called "tower ships."

If you look up Chinese and Korean warships from the 700s-1400S AD they're virtually the same (like this Ming boat.)

But because Feudal Japan was in the ass end of fucking nowhere, they failed to update on the naval meta. Even their neighbors have moved on: China was cribbing notes from Europeans and practiced age of sail warfare while Koreans at the very least had naval artillery.

To go beyond the visible coastline you need fairly advanced navigation methods to make it back again.
>>
>>18446458
They were stuck in a civil war for like 300 years you can’t expand if the local lords aren’t together.

That was the exact opposite of the Korean doctrine until the end of the 14th century. Korean Junks in general were pretty much small corsairs with an oval bow built purely for speed. They didn't have big bunks like Chinese Junks and instead had double crows nests.

Also let's not exaggerate. Late Ming Junks had a lot of good things going for them but even a Mark 1 ship on Qi's reformed manual from 1584 had only 2 large breech loading ""culverins"" whilst the rest were light and medium swivel guns.

They were very good for what they were supposed to do. When it comes to trade and deep sea voyages they obviously didn't use these. But for war they're pretty good.
>>18448693
I hate this over-exaggerated map and all its bullshit migrations. And it's bad at being a map, too. Because you won't be able to know what direction the migrations are going in unless you know where they are supposed to go.

These were floating fortresses, deliberately tall to give soldiers an advantage as well as decks to fire from, though I don't see shooting holes on your model. They weren't intended for long voyages, just hop from one island to the next.

Although the Japanese had a limited merchant fleet, Japanese pirates were notorious for centuries and fishing was big business, their fishing ships resembled European barques, possibly because they needed to resist ocean swells. Note the flat back and very large rudder needed to control the vessel in poor conditions at a small cost in speed. Also the low flat layout to prevent capsizes. They'd often be making short journeys where they'd have to sail against the wind one way or the other. Japanese shipwrights understood these principles probably better than the Chinese and Koreans.
