And what do you mean by capitulating? Allowing slavery to be edged out in a way that doesn't economically destroy half the country is just the decent thing to do if you aren't a sectionalist retard. But most abolitionists were, and in the process, destroyed the country.

It'd reduce the geographic concentration of slaves thus making particular regions less entrenched in the system, and spread out the reach of slaveholding as a system. Plus the west would never develop a plantation economy to begin with and Southern elites knew that. Northern elites did too. Abolitonists still pushed the issue though because for them it wasn't about slavery, it was about hating black people.
