Marx didn't think peasants and workers were intellectuals. They needed intellectuals to lead them. Wage workers aren't actually revolutionary because they need wages to live. Peasants are revolutionary because they have crops that they can easily take over and or withhold.
The proletariat class rose up in October 1917, proving Marx right.
