In North Africa the 9th Australian was genuinely one of the most dependable and effective divisions the allies had in-theatre, at a time when the British commonwealth/americans really hadn’t gotten the hang of fighting the Wehrmacht yet. New Guinea in 1941/42 was extremely vital for keeping open land/sea links for the allies at a time when, again, the Americans still hadn’t quite gotten their shit in order there yet.Other than that the Australians weren’t really relevant for the second half of the war. They pulled out of Europe with the exception of the RAAF squadrons flying sorties there, and the army’s performance in the pacific from 1944-45 was godawful and entirely secondary to the American show.

The Aussies may have been there, but there were a hell of a lot more Brits, Indians, and South Africans, and even New Zealanders than Australians.
