Our greatest misfortune is the fact that the dominant religion of our society is one that actively demands irrational belief from you. Historically that has not been the case. If Pagans won, we would be free to try to understand the Gods in a rational manner and would not be ostracized from society, as long as we participated in rituals, which would be undistinguishable from any cultural holiday. In fact there wouldn't even really be "religion", it would just be an extension of our culture. This bifurcation of identity was introduced by Christians to convince followers that they don't have to become a "Roman" (keep in mind when Christianity spread, the Roman Empire was flooded by middle Eastern Immigrants, who were resentful of Rome and also Germanics, who were too proud and ethnically self-aware to want to give up their heritage)
