To what extent can piracy be understood as a global, historical phenomenon linked to economic inequality rather than just criminal activity?
>>
Are you rich?
>Yes
Then any reason you can pull out your ass is justified whether it's illegal dumping of waste, invading EEZ and territorial waters for fish, or holding assets ransom.

Japanese on Twitter were complaining about other countries pirating Content that isn't accessible to them. In one discussion a Jap wanted to own a Russian by threatening him to pirate a copy of Dostoevsky. He didn't know that the Russians feel honored whenever foreigners want to read their works, so several of them sent him a list with book recommendations to download.

I learned about he cangaçeiros after watching this Brazilian kino.
Then I learned that Hobsbawm came up with an entire category to classify this type of criminal: social bandits.
This describes people like the cangaçeiros and pirates that commit crimes in rebellion against oppressive authorities.
He wrote an entire book about it from a Marxist/class struggle perspective if you’re curious.
