Americans always had comparatively advanced women's rights since colonial times. A lot of feminist mythology is just that, a myth that pretends all of them were chained to a stove and beaten by their alcoholic husband on a regular basis until the 19th Amendment or the 1960s or whatever arbitrary point in time you use.
