Was Franco technically a "Fascist"? Explain the nuance to me.

No, he was a conservative monarchist who allied with fascists as a means to an end. He instinctively defended corporate Capitalism and the crown tradition in a stronger manner than, say, Italian fascism, and he clearly didn’t have any particular sympathies to the Falangists as seen by how he had their uncooperative leadership whacked shortly before the war and kept purging the party as a whole after it.
But honestly, in most respects he didn’t have much of a coherent ideology at all other than “‘ate commies, ‘luv the king, simple as.” His closest advisor called him the “sphinx without a secret” because so many people thought he was keeping his own social/political/economic opinions a secret from everybody, but the truth was that he just didn’t have very defined opinions at all outside of being vaguely right wing, supporting the restoration of the king, and not liking WASP/French style democracy or republicanism.
That was why he was the perfect fit to lead the Nationalist coalition; he was practically the only politically active military bigwig in all of Spain that had never antagonized any of the Nationalist factions by difference of opinion before, because he just never cared to.

He was a "regular" conservative dictator like Pinochet which is why he managed to become so popular with the average Spanish normie of the 20th century. The Falangists, who were Spain's fascist party, never gained much influence due to the country not being suited for a revolution or takeover of theirs which wasn't the case in the more industrialized and younger Italy and Germany.

The reason Franco gets called a fascist all the time is because your average liberal midwit thinks that fascism is just a synonym for authoritarian.

If he had lived before ww2, he would just have been called a normal dictator.
He gets called fascist because he talked to Hitler that one time and praised him.
>>
His Caudillo dictatorship was Fascist inspired I guess.

He was just a tradcath at the end of the day.

Call it "Fascist", call it Fascistoid, it was definitely a Third positionist regime which right wingers would accuse of "communist" today.

If you want to get nuanced about it Mussolini's Italy, Hitler's Germany, and Franco's Spain are pretty different and only all called "fascist" out of convenience as most people accept "fascist" to essentially just mean "illiberal and/or undemocratic."

I mean this is an observation Orwell made back in the 40s. Even then, people like Salazar and Piłsudski aren't generally referred to as "fascists" when if you are going to include Franco you might as well. ""regular" conservative dictator" is probably the best actual description of Franco, alas.

Good post. It should also be noted that Francoism changed throughout the decades and while the initial post-war form of it veered closer to fascism, by the end he was just a regular conservative authoritarian.

From a commie standpoint he was a fascist because he was a violent reaction against communism to uphold class relations.
From a libtard standpoint he was a fascist because he has an authoritarian clerical chud nationalist vibe.
Fron a chud standpoint he's not really a fascist, more like a Pierre de la Czeslav Burgen-Nipple von Hustle kind of guy.
From a history autist standpoint he was allied with fascism but doesn't really hit all the spots of a quintessentially fascist regime.
Basically it depends on whom you ask. Fascism doesn't have a fixed definition and is more like a vibe.

As far as I know, he never cared for mass politics, which is a core component for fascism
