The Vatican Obelisk was brought from Heliopolis, Egypt, where it was used to worship the Sun God Ra, to Rome by order of Emperor Caligula in 37 AD. It was transported via a specially built ship to decorate the Circus of Nero. It was later moved to its current location in St. Peter's Square in 1586 by Pope Sixtus V to worship the Sun God Christ.
