How do you deal with the problem of non-resistant non-belief? It seems a bit mean that people who aren't convinced of the claim "god exists" but would otherwise be happy to worship him would roast in hellfire forever and ever.

Men will be judged according to their deeds, it is genuinely for your betterment to pray to God and find no equal to him. As the Christians and Jews are corrupted, by their priests and women if recall correctly, the way of the prophet aka ehl-u-Sunnah would the best example for a believing man(mumin).
