>>18452935As an English person who has travelled much in Europe and grown up in a grim crime ridden shithole I've wondered this exact question for years and I've no idea why it isn't picked up more and spoken about. England is grim in a way that you have to go to eastern europe to see anything similar and I find it odd that it isn't discussed more even among middle class/upper class Brits who also seem to just ignore it. It is an issue that is just swept under the carpet. I've been wondering also if it has always been like this or is some post war symptom of decline. I grew up in a tough white working class area and all I can say is it just culturally all encompassing. Kids always fighting eachother, dads talking about past fights and exploits, hearing violent songs at football games, hearing about what older kids have done, who have gone to prison, hearing about stabbings, these things just all create a certain mindset and when you have no money you have nothing to lose and it might be cliche to just blame poverty but in Britain's case it can't be ruled out as a primary reason. Everyone I knew had no money growing up and if they wanted money crime was the only option and the reputation you get for committing crime is much better than the one you get for working McDonald's. In fact if you are a young lad and you are brave, tough and ambitious, basically crime is your only option. I think something worth noting too is the very peculiar relationship between the wealthy and the lower classes in England. England is a place where the king enacted a law permitting the forceful closure of common lands which the poor used to raise livestock or grow crops, kick them off the land and then made a law making homelessness and vagrancy illegal.
