Protestantism is a helluva thing.Being self-professed Christians, they must believe that they hold the one true faith which up to that point had been corrupted by satanic worldly forces in Christendom. The question of "what makes us so special" tends to end up with the answer "we are the generation to witness the fulfillment of the prophesies of Jesus."
This has been a land of wacky cult compounds ever since Plymouth Rock, with the fevers growing and breaking over the centuries. The 19th century saw not only a lot of weird religious sects but secular utopian communities like Brook Farm and Oneida, and we’ll always have more charismatic leaders and zombie followers, especially in today’s apocalyptic times.
