Brad Sigmon was the 47th person executed by South Carolina since 1976. In 2001, he beat his ex-girlfriend’s parents to death in Greenville. Sigmon was a Palmetto State native born November 12, 1957. His mother Ginny had him at 17 and gave birth to four more children in short succession, while his father Ron was an Army officer. As a military family, the Sigmons moved around often and lived as far away as the Philippines at one point. Ron was also a drunkard and physically abusive to his wife, so they divorced when Brad was in grade school.

Brad was also beaten by his father, often when trying to shield his mother from his anger. After they got divorced, the Sigmon siblings were often shuffled between the homes of their parents and step parents. Brad began working at 16 to help feed his family and was heavily involved in caring for his younger brothers and sisters. He had his first brush with the law in Greer when he was arrested for a robbery in May 1976.
>>
Sigmon dropped out of high school in his senior year and got married. He and his wife moved to Manning and had one son together. Everyone who knew Sigmon testified that he was a responsible provider who loved his siblings, wife, and son. He had drug abuse and mental health issues for years; over the years he accumulated several DUIs.

On November 17, 1990, Sigmon was shot in the stomach during a domestic dispute at his wife’s house and was treated at a Clarendon County hospital. His 12 year old son was also shot in the arm. Sigmon was hospitalized for one week and was then discharged. By the late 1990s, he was residing in Greenville, during which time he lived in his girlfriend Rebecca Barbare’s trailer. She broke it off with him in early 2001 and moved in with her parents Bill Larke, 62, and Gladys, 59. Sigmon started stalking his ex relentlessly to determine if she was seeing other men.
>>
On April 26, Sigmon and his friend Eugene Strube spent the evening drinking and using cocaine. The former announced that when Barbare left to drive her kids to school, he would go to the Larkes’ home, tie them up, and “get a hold of” Barbare. Strube was supposed to go along with the plan but backed out.

The next morning, Sigmon entered the Larkes’ home and encountered David in the kitchen and Gladys in the living room. Wielding a baseball bat, he began viciously attacking them. Both were struck in the head nine times and died of massive blunt force head trauma. Once David and Gladys were dead, Sigmon took the former’s gun and waited for Rebecca to come back. She did and Sigmon forced her to get into her ‘01 Honda Passport at gunpoint. He meant to switch vehicles at some point and drive Barbare in his own car to North Carolina, but the plan went awry when she leapt out of the Honda and fled. Sigmon shot at her but she escaped. He ran out of ammo, floored it, and got out of there.
>>
Barbare was treated at a local hospital and told police that her ex had tied up or killed her parents. They went to the house and found their bodies inside. A fugitive warrant was put out for Sigmon and he was tracked down and apprehended in Gatlinburg, Tennessee on May 7 after he spoke with his mother on the phone (she was assisting police in trying to find him). Sigmon surrendered peacefully and confessed to everything, saying he ultimately meant to kill Becky and himself in a murder-suicide. He was charged with burglary, first degree murder with a deadly weapon, and grand larceny.

At his trial, he called no witnesses to his defense. The medical examiner testified that the Larkes had died of massive bleeding into the sinus cavity so they inhaled and choked on their own blood. Both succumbed to their injuries in 3-5 minutes and both also had defensive injuries on their forearms. The defense argued that he was mentally unstable and had unresolved trauma from his childhood and substance abuse issues. They also said he’d been completely cooperative with police when taken into custody and was well-behaved in jail. Nonetheless, the jury found him guilty of two counts of first degree murder and one count of burglary, and he was sentenced to death on July 20, 2002.
>>
Sigmon appealed his conviction to the state supreme court in 2005 and ‘13; both were rejected. He appealed at the Federal level and was rejected twice in 2018 and ‘20. The Supreme Court also declined to hear the case. His execution date was scheduled for February 5, 2021 but the state supreme court granted a stay due to a shortage of lethal injection drugs; for that reason South Carolina had not performed an execution since 2011. The state legislature proposed reviving the electric chair or firing squad as alternative execution methods, but in September 2023 the Department of Corrections announced that they’d secured a new supplier of lethal injection drugs.

Sigmon and another death row inmate, Freddie Owens, both filed lawsuits against the proposed revival of the electric chair. A new execution date was set for May 13, 2022, but due to the pending lawsuit, he got another stay for the time being. The suit, jointly filed by several inmates, charged that the chair and firing squad violated the 8th Amendment. The state supreme court ruled on July 31, 2024 that both methods were constitutional. Freddie Owens, who had murdered a convenience store clerk in 1997, was executed September 20 followed by Richard Moore on November 1 and Marion Bowman on January 31, 2025.
>>
He continued to fight his impending execution despite having voluntarily chosen firing squad, a method South Carolina had never used before. Rebecca Barbare, now Rebecca Armstrong, said she was personally against capital punishment but believed that Sigmon still deserved it for murdering her parents, and that they were good people who’d raised five children.

The execution was carried out March 7, 2025 at Broad River Correctional Institution using .308 Winchester rifles loaded with fragmenting rounds designed to shred tissue on impact, ensuring extremely rapid death. Sigmon was the fourth person executed in the US by firing squad since 1976, the other three all in Utah. He ordered KFC chicken for his last meal and in his last statement said he believed the death penalty was against the Bible since the Old Testament no longer applied to Christians.

Gonna be honest, even though 4chan retards hate antinatalism and the fact women are men aren't marrying no more. It seems pretty obvious that less marriages and kids will lead to less crimes, in the past women for all intents and purposes didn't really have a choice and if a man wanted to marry them they kind of had to accept to even have rights/a home.

Nowadays women and men need to, for the most part, actually love each other and be a good match for them to even have children. A lot less domestic abuse between YOUNG heterosexual couples than older couples.
