In fact there was a debate which name they wanted to go by and Greece would probably not have naturally won out. They would have preferred to call themselves Roman. They are not even a real people. They are the religious remnants of a multicultural radically Christian Empire, which has been defeated by another multicultural Empire and were granted special religious privileges. Like Athens literally spoke Albanian. Like a substantial part of Greece was literally populated by Albanians.
