Why did he fail to make Russia a modern western power? He did everything right
he didn't fail, russia became the same as the other western countries>no because they had industrialization and liberalism and shitThat's a later, post Napoleonic dynamic. Russia and France in 1750 were the same, Russia was a "modern western power", it's just the definition of modernity changed a lot in the ensuing century after his death.
>>18455854>Russia and France in 1750 were the samExcept for serfdom
>>18455854Thread's over. Any replies past this point will just be autism and butthurt from polacks and their irrational hatred against Russia.
>>18455836But he did? Not his fault that his successors were incompetent.Russia really isn’t that different from Germany or Austria-Hungary, they all were hoisted by their own petard by participating in the Concert of Europe and trying to stall Europe’s sociopolitical development. The wheel of history is merciless, you either roll along with it or you get unceremoniously crushed beneath it.Also Russia has never been Western lmao.
>>18455856That's due to different socio-economic conditions. France didn't LEGALLY abolish serfdom until 1789 though, even if in practice it had been rendered obsolete long before then. If serfdom were not profitable in Russia as it wasn't in France they'd have the same de-facto conditions as France. The fact is Russia was an extremely large rural country with vast swathes of agricultural land, so serfdom was extremely profitable there. France on the other hand required more specialized technical industries, the closest they came to agriculture was wineries, which suit free labor more than labor being tied to land.
>>18455836He did tho. Sweden looked like it would have been the Hegemon of the north, raping and pillaging all its neighbors. However, the Russian Bear awoke and buckbroke the Swedes so hard they larp as have been hippie pacifists they're whole life.
>>18455836the west is catholic. he kept russia orthodox.
>>18455854>Russia and France in 1750 were the same>were the same you are comparing protocapitalist bureaucratic country to slavery like serfdom feudal one
By the time of WW1. Outside of urban areas in France, The Low Countries, Britain and Germany, most of Europe was still socially, politically, economically and mentally deeply still stuck in the ancien regime ways.
>>18455836His successors rolled lots of things back because he was too radical for the bureaucracy. Catherine changed the table of ranks from merit to seniority.
