They lost political power because Britain made them do things like "legalize Anglicanism", and because their kids were a lot less hardline on religious matters than the founding generation and that strict religious lifestyle wasn't a lot of fun. And a lot of them flipped to Unitarianism in the late 18th/early 19th century.But the religion's still around, they're called Congregationalists now. Go to a town anywhere in New England and there will usually be a church named "first church of (town)", that's the church which descends from the state church of puritan times.
