Is Brutalist architecture misunderstood?
>>
I understand it perfectly

No, its just cheap sovlless nu-art for pseuds

It looks clean and alot of people hate that because it reminds them of a high stress environment like a hospital. They go insane if their house isnt made out of 10,000 different materials
>>
i love Brutalist architecture, so long as the shapes arent purely functional. I want large megalomania
>>
Cool if done right
Cool if new or maintained
Horrible if left to degrade, though that in itself can have either a regional or nostalgic appeal.
Futurism and Brutalism have a lot of the hauntological (hauntologic?) aspect to them.

Hm, don't think so. Does what it set out to do.

Hey, my old college library!

It fucking sucks, by the way. The entraance is underground, while all the books are up in the "mushroom," meaning you have to go up like three stories to get to even the lowest level of books. Unfortunately, the elevator is tiny and unreliable, since it's from the 60s, and can't be upgraded because it's built into the center of this massive concrete fortress. Even if it's working, you often have to wait in line to use it, since it can only fit a few people at a time. The only other way to get between floors is the fire escape stairway, which is a pain in the ass if you're trying to go to the upper levels.

>brutalist architect designs a building that makes fat people like you seethe at having to walk up 3 (three!) flights of stairs

Concrete is based, once you filter out the socialist ideals and the need for every brutalist architect to build buildings that looked like massive heat sinks.

Yes and no. Most people who hate brutalism/modernism legitimately just have no taste. But there are also people who hate Brutalism while understanding it.

One reason I really disliked the film "The Brutalist" is that it made absolutely no effort to explain the theory behind Brutalism, why it is important, and why it is good. So coming into it as someone who does not like Brutalism it did not win me over. The unnecessary and heavy handed gay rape scene was alright though.
