Americans tend to be opportunistic, and will happily ally with people who were previously their enemy if it brings them some immediate advantage.The Americans weren't inclined to like the communists, but the Nazis declared war on them, and were already at war with American allies, so that meant supporting the communists supported America's actual allies in the war effort, if only by distracting the bulk of the Nazis resources with a costly war in the east.
