Kuomintang was propped up by Soviets first though after the fall of the monarchy, funnily enough.

Every nation needs to be autocratic until it's stable. Give me one successful democratic developing nation under duress. RoC eventually did become a democracy.

The white army they were supporting was incompetent. The reds were much more disciplined and organized

Americans were supportive of the efforts to combat the communists during the Russian Civil War, but it didn't pan out. Americans didn't want to get dragged into a European affair, so didn't over commit to it.

Later, the way WW2 shook out ended up with Americans supporting the communists in Russia, because by the time the US became involved, Hitler had declared war on them, which made them an ally of opportunity and circumstance. Americans tend to be opportunistic, and will happily ally with people who were previously their enemy if it brings them some immediate advantage. The Americans weren't inclined to like the communists, but the Nazis declared war on them, and were already at war with American allies, so that meant supporting the communists supported America's actual allies in the war effort, if only by distracting the bulk of the Nazis resources with a costly war in the east.
