why did the Soviet Union never build a canal here? It could've been called the Khruschev Canal
>>18460781Only Japanese would do that. Slav can't make shit.
>>18460781Why? There's nothing there
>gargantuan undertaking>virtually no traffic
>>18460781Why didn't they just build a huge bridge over the Ottoman empire to China?
>>18460781>making a gargantuan 100km canal for a measly 1000km detour>in bumfuck nowhere with no shipping routesYeah I truly wonder why
>>18460881>dodges the questionthey could have easily done it
>>18460781No shipping routes
>>18461435how is giving you the reasons why they didn't do it dodging the question
>>18460781There is an actual answer here which is that most of it is frozen anyway and just clearing the ports they have is hard. This is why canals are rare in the northern hemisphere, start to be common in Europe, and in the rest of the world most land is either very flat and smooth or not irregular enough. Canals are one of the worst ways to expand access since most focus is on utilizing ports that already exist rather than creating a shitty port that is somewhere nobody lives.

There's a canal there but it's secret (underground), they built it to move submarines stealthily, that's why you can't see it on gmaps, it's underground.
