Historically in the Spanish colonial system, the Mestizos could enter the clergy and were eligible for ordination as priests, while the Quechea-speaking indigenes were the primary objects of evangelization. So then in the 1960s there's a massive expansion of the education system and the church declines in relative terms, and the kids who would've gone into the clergy become communists and go out to "evangalize" their Maoist gospel in the countryside.Also here's a Peruvian indigene music group.
