The first American woman in space was Sally Ride in 1983, the youngest American ever in space. She was gay and later died of cancer but also had AIDS at the time.

The first woman ever in space was Valentina Tereshkova, in 1963. She is alive and a member of the Russian Parliament today.

>The NASA astronaut class of 1978 was the agency's first new group of astronaut recruits in 12 years, specifically meant to fly the Space Shuttle. They also included the agency's first African-American and female astronauts, Guion Bluford, Ron McNair, Sally Ride, and Judith Resnik--of these four individuals, two would suffer a tragic end.[9]
Already doing DEI hiring at this early phase.

>Flying a woman in space was a new experience for NASA and carried with it a few surprises. Prior to Challenger's launch on STS-7, Ride was queried by a male flight doctor how many female sanitary napkins she would need. He asked if 50 would be enough. "You can cut that down to about half," was her reply.[3]
