The State of Muskogee, a strange, short lived frontier “nation” in Spanish Florida led by a Maryland born British Loyalist adventurer named William Augustus Bowles. Bowles had fought for the British during the American Revolution, ended up among the Creeks, married into Native communities, learned Native languages, and then tried to turn himself into the architect of an independent Southeastern Indian state that could resist both Spain and the expanding United States. The Florida Department of State says a congress of Creeks and Seminoles elected him “director general” of the State of Muskogee in 1799, with its capital at Mikasuke, near present day Tallahassee. He was captured and handed over to Spanish authorities in 1803, later dying in a Havana prison.
