"Slavery" is a blanket term to refer to historically different institutions with something in common and also with remarkable differences. Spanish slavery was quite different from Anglo slavery, from the slavery of Barbary pirates, or from slavery deep into subsaharan Africa. In general and relative terms, in the Spanish domains, the number of slaves was low, the conditions were better, and it was easier to be emancipated. Many free Blacks from New Orleans, Florida, California, or other can trace back their origins to the time when Spain held those domains, before the American take over. Furthermore, In the Spanish domains, because of the influence of the Catholic Church, Africans were recognized not as property, but as people with a soul that can only be forced to work as part of their education from a state of existence unburdened by duty. Of course, contrary to the usual practice in the English or American slavery, no Black family was ever separated by its masters. Only in Cuba in the XIX century, before the Spanish American war, we can see that treatment become harsher; interestingly, by the same creole oligarchy that cried for freedom and was tacitally allied with America's South.Can we acknowledge that the Spanish Empire was one of the most humane institutions to ever come in this planet? The Spanish loved slavery, Cuba alone imported over twice as many as the north American colonies. The Spanish also loved racemixing, which the Anglos avoided to the point of paranoia over "negro taint" lasting to the 1960s.
The consequences of Spain's "different institution" where they import countless slaves and miscegenate with them as well as the natives have been disastrous for their now independent colonies, since the effects are genetic they will persist until a program of genetic modification, forced sterilization of the shlubby brown underclasses and intensive eugenics is implemented. Argentina may be ahead of the curve in this department.
