I was reading about the Mexican American war and came to understand that much of the Hispanics in those territories had been flirting with independence before American settlers showed up. The region had its own culture distinct and isolated from the core population centers around Mexico City. Apparently there were silver barons hiring mercenaries to fight the government for claims to locals mines in places like Zacatecas as far back as the 1700s.
