>>18464776Obviously the USSR and the Western Allies is like the best known example of an unlikely alliance, but as a subset of that I really like the Soviet invasion of Manchuria because its so unlikely but so earnest and overwhelming and brutal on the soviets part. Like it could reasonably have been expected they would renege or drag their feet, but instead they absolutely throw everything they can at Japan in one of the most devastating invasions in history and wipe out like a million Japanese troops in a week.
