Is this supposed to be Alcibiades and Socrates? If so, Penguin's edition of Plato's Republic has notes mainly deriving from postmodernists, so you'll get a grasp on why the homosexuality and degeneracy was so prevalent in that culture. Though, for the philosophy alone its a decent work, postmodernist notes aside.

If Plato is to be believed, he didn't because Socrates wouldn't let him. But I'd argue that this was a mistake. Alcibiades was clearly a smart fellow, but his personality flaws got the better of him. A good dicking would have straightened him out. This is why the corrupting the youth charge against Socrates had merit. If he'd been a proper pederast like everyone else, Athens would have won the Pelopponesian War.
