Christbros... why did Europeans make their hyper-advanced clocks into cringe larpagan icons of dead gods instead of based Jesus stuff?

Have you ever gone into royal palaces in Europe? It's full of Hellenistic imagery. In the royal palace in Spain, apart from their little chapel, I saw a single devotional image to Mary, not a cross, nothing. I am 100% convinced that they worshiped them.

Because it looks based

Because deep down they know the Greco-Roman gods are real gods, but they don't want to admit it. Even today, space programs invoke the names of Greco-Roman gods.

>You can't worship the gods, because.... because you just can't!
Why did God make them rich and powerful and not you then?

Paganism speaks more to elites and those seeking excellence while Christianity speak more to the plebs and those seeking conformity
>>
cause that kind of gaudy opulence is something associated with pagan emperors and kings, not Christ, who repeatedly urged his followers to become paupers

Knowledge of classical Greece and Rome was cultural capital among the European elite. Average peasant didn't know who Apollo was or what iconography was associated with him, only somebody who had been educated in a classical fashion would recognize Apollonic icons and references. Through the centuries, this trend continued. it's why when you read old European manuscripts, they're constantly making allusions to old pagan gods and figures in the recorded classics. It's a way of flexing their classical education, their membership to the exclusive club of people who could afford to be tutored or educated in a university. This was before all the plebs were let in, and universities were converted into daycares for rich plebs and training centers for workers.

Showing that you are educated in the classics is basically asserting your patrician status. Or it was. These days it's more likely to make you look like a cringy neo pagan idiot.

Why was that allowed in Christian society though?

Religion was always associated with the sky, time, and cosmic order. Europeans turning their most advanced time-keeping devices into shrines to Greek gods goes beyond mere flexing, it's a genuine act of devotion
