What was the USSR like in the 1920s? It looks better compared to what came after.

It was the working man's paradise. Meanwhile in America, richfags were playing casino with people's finances and niggers were being holocausted with rope after sundown.

poor but comfy before stalin fucked it all up

It was wrecked by a massive civil war and was just picking up the rubble. State repression was (by Russian standards) not too bad yet since the Communist Party was still a "party democracy" and Stalin didn't have the authority to just arbitrarily get a few million people arrested and purged yet, but the country was still poor.
Art wise, it was an "exciting" time of Avant Garde development and ideas, many artists saw the USSR as the society of the future and every new idea in arts was being tested out there as part of this hype for the future, it's how we got stuff like Tatlin's Tower or modernist apartment blocs which look straight out of the 1960s

It was rebuilding from a civil war that raped the country. There were a ton of bandits everywhere in the countryside, lots of scattered resistance. The economy breifly bounced back with the implementation of the New Economic Policy and the easing of war communism that meant that life did get better gradually in spite of all the problems.
