guillotines are very efficient and rather humane. hanging was the common alternative. the french actually kept guillotining people into the 70s.
lethal injection was considered a humane death, but getting the right medication and all is a lot of effort. too much for prisoners back in the day. shooting was for improvised executions, short notice or in the field. it is rather messy.
