If God is capable of infinite forgiveness, why would he allow for people to be tormented by fire for an eternity? It's seriously a thought that upsets me. Regardless of how good or how just a person in life is, because they either sinned in some way or didn't believe in God / Jesus, they'll be burning in pain forever.I know the common defense is that sinning against an immortal, perfect, and eternal being warrants an eternal punishment, and we can't understand God's justice, but humans exactly by our very nature are not immortal or perfect. After a million years of torture, surely even the worst genocider and child molester has suffered enough and been cleansed of his sins? A person, whose only crime was being an atheist is condemned to an eternity in fire, even if he spent most of his life living as the Bible told him to. It's just not simply just for a being, who is infinitely forgiving, to just torture beings for an eternity. The entire thing just upsets me, because I was on my way to truly converting to Christianity. It had given me a lot. I genuinely loved and appreciated the positive impact it has on society, and how uplifting the message of the Bible was. But the idea of infinite torture in on itself has managed to turn me away from the faith.
