The idea is that you can’t plop borders completely open etc. until you have good enough quality of life parity with the west so that you don’t get brain drained to oblivion the moment the possibility becomes reality.

Also, less military spending, also directing that money to the quality of life of common citizens. Not disarmament but reprioritizing, not due to ideology, and I sure as fuck I wouldn’t make noise about it, but the idea is that NATO - SU war isn’t gonna happen either way if I don’t start one, and what good is such a massive military force if you’re facing internal collapse soon? Silently diverting resources elsewhere makes all the sense.

Gorbachev was unironically a true communist patriot and wanted to restore the party to being a workers' party rather than a brezhnevite oligarchy. He was a true hero.
His only mistake was trying that after Stalin+Khrushchev+Brezhnev fucked up the relations with the rest of the bloc and completely destroyed any goodwill that Lenin had built.
