On this day—May 13, 1846—the United States Congress declared war on Mexico, officially beginning the Mexican-American War.President James K. Polk had asked Congress for the declaration after Mexican forces had shed “American blood upon American soil” in the disputed territory between the Nueces River and the Rio Grande. Congress voted overwhelmingly in favor, and the war was on.What followed was a stunningly successful American campaign: Zachary Taylor won victories in northern Mexico, Winfield Scott led a bold amphibious landing at Veracruz and marched all the way to Mexico City, and the U.S. ultimately secured a massive territorial expansion under the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo in 1848, adding California, New Mexico, and other vast lands to the growing nation.A pivotal moment in America’s westward expansion.

This is the most underrated war in American history. It deserves a large portion of the copious attention that is given to the American Civil War. The United States successfully occupying Mexico City should be a more well-known fact. The Duke of Wellington was so impressed with it that he called Winfield Scott the greatest living general.
