The way to save him is so easy I wonder why they didn't, just pull him out even if he breaks his legs. I have read the argument that he could die from that, yes, but breaking his legs still gives him a chance to survive. 25-50% chance of survival is way more than 0. And who cares about his consent, he had children back home, consent doesn't matter when you are saving a parent

He was buried up to his shoulders. When they finally managed to clear the rubble and could have pulled him out, probably even keeping his leg, the cave collapsed the next day blocking the entrance.

I was always wondering, while all this was going on, why didn't someone try going into one of the other caves and seeing if they were connected to that one? Imagine if there was a passage right on the other side.
