Trade and economic specialization were more developed than in the Horn of Africa and East Africa (Production systems in pre-colonial Africa, E Green, 2013) and productivity in some areas was very high for standards of the pre modern period (Precolonial African Industry and the Atlantic Trade, 1500-1800, J Thornton, 1990-1991).
