Neoliberalism got extremely lucky coming into power after the oil shock that killed Keynesianism waned (due to diplomacy with OPEC, not neoliberal economics) and on the ground floor of the tech boom, which it also had nothing to do with. Couple that with boomers hitting their 20s and 30s around this time of plenty and having it solidified in their minds that neoliberalism if the greatest economic system ever, especially since it currently heavily favors the old who make their money off of property and stock ownership rather than through labor.The "old left" died long before neoliberalism in America though. Cold War repression and the Taft-Hartley act de-politicized the unions and turned them into protection rackets for literal mobsters. The new left developed in the universities, and because people in universities are way more likely to have a bourgeois background, bourgeois values came with them and they focused more on identity than class because they didn't really suffer class-based immiseration and wages and jobs for blue collars were plentiful enough at the time anyway, so it wasn't a big issue. This came to a culture clash over Vietnam between the new left and the remnants of the "old left" in the labor movement, who supported the war out of nationalism. One Reaganite and Clintonian neoliberalis swept the last vestiges of union power away through financialization of the economy and offshoring, the "old left" was truly dead.
