Compare that to Vietnam where the French insisted on clinging on to them and dragging the US into that quagmire. If they'd just given Vietnam independence Ho Chih Minh would have joined the Western bloc.

The Congress party, which ruled India until about the end of the Cold War and still stayed in power via coalition governments, was a secular party that emphasized social democratic economic reform. Note that “social democracy” doesn’t imply full-blown Marxist socialism, but rather argues for a third way or middle ground between socialism and capitalism. They implemented a planned economy, for example, and were one of the few countries that started the Non-Aligned movement to separate from the USSR and USA-controlled blocs. Unfortunately, nobody had worked out the weeds of how such an economic system would work back when they were in power, so they weren’t able to do it as effectively as the more wealthy, less populated and more homogeneous Nordic countries were able to. This eventually led to economic crisis, the Congress governments giving in to neoliberal/globalist economic policies, the rise of Hindu fascism, and in turn the current Hindu (BJP) ruling government in India. That being said, the Hindu party is losing support and Congress rule along with social democratic policies might see a comeback as the country is in a much better position compared to 1950-1980.

Communist parties in India do exist, have a small federal governmental presence, with greater power in the states of the extreme east (Bengal and eastward) and the extreme south (Kerala and surrounding). They are functionally social democratic, however, even if they keep the banners and talk of Marxism intact.

Then there are the Naxalites, Indian Maoist insurrectionists who have guns and bombs, and won’t hesitate to use them to bring about the glorious revolution. They are slowly dying out as the working class of agrarian and industrial workers do, in fact, have more than chains to lose unlike what Marx claimed. Religion is also incredibly important to the Indians, such that parties are organized by religious or secular ideological affiliation rather than left vs right.

They kind of fucked up and mixed the worst western and eastern policies together into one big shit stew that took them 70 years to turn into something that is now beginning to look functional
