The wheel was never used south of the Sahara except for Nubia and a few isolated cases like Dahomey and Kongo where it was introduced by modern Europeans and only employed for ritual purposes like wheeled funeral biers or wheeled idols. There was virtually no practical use of wheels for transport, milling, pottery-making or spinning (although I think the Swahilis used potters wheels), in contrast to Europe and Asia where every society made widespread use of wheels for practical purposes, even when they weren't used for vehicles.Large parts of sub-Saharan Africa did have written language of course, in most cases Muslims using Arab script but also Ethiopians with their own script or coastal Africans like the Kongos or Malagasy adopting European scripts during the early modern period.
