Why a lot of scifi just ww2 in space

Scifi fantasy is more entertaining than hard scifi.

It's the largest war in human history, the largest modern war, and is the most recent truly BIG war. It's an almost inevitable source of inspiration for anyone looking to either imagine future conflicts or create a futuristic mythos.

It goes further than "WW2".
Every mainstream Western media is just good-bad dichotomy derived from Abrahamic morality.
It's why Jap shit tends to be more introspective, due to their underlying Buddhist mentality. Chinese shit tends to be focused around family due to their underlying Confucian morality, and South Korean shit all revolves around class, because that's the only virtue that they cherish post WW2.

A typical example of a Western film is something like you say, Star Wars, marvel, it's all just good guy vs bad guy. Good guy is good because he believes in the right thing, bad guy is bad because he's ontologically evil, like the devil.

A typical example of a Japanese film is something like Your Name. A show where someone is sick of their life and wishes to be reborn as someone new, before ultimately realizing this changes nothing.

A typical example of a Chinese film is Hi Mom. A story about a woman going back in time to see her Mom's life and realizing how much she's sacrificed to be who she is and how she needs to respect her parents more for all they've done for them.

A typical example of a South Korean film is Parasite, where a lower class family seek to co-opt the lives of a rich family. Or Squid Game, where a lower class family are willing to do anything to win a gameshow and a big cash prize.

You will see that every single piece of media follows this pattern for all countries. They all have underlying values whether they like it or not, of course most of the West is atheist today but their morality and culture still comes from christianity so all of their films reflect that. It's inescapable.

It's the three Rs of sci-fi: Rocket, Robots and Ray beams. That's what makes it successful.

I see Wehrmacht soldiers facing the Red Army

Ah yes, the famous Nazi jihad in the name of their messianic leader against the fractured political order of a decadent empire. Totally 20th century vibes.

Dune is absolutely not like WW2.
