I live near the "Gouzenko Building" in Ottawa. Three days after the end of WW2, Igor Gouzenko, a Soviet ambassador, attempted to defect to Canada and brought 109 documents confirming Soviet espionage with him. He first went to the Ottawa Journal and then to the Department of Defence. He was turned away from both as Mackenzie King, our prime minister, initially didn't want to cause a diplomatic incident between Canada and her recent wartime ally. He had to return home to his apartment on Somerset and hide in his neighbours apartment, watching through the keyhole as his apartment was broken into by the NKVD, before the police and then the Canadian government intervened and gave him asylum.

I find it very funny reading how Gouzenko was drawn to defect because of how cozy and functional the neighbourhood he lived in was at the time. In 2026, the view from Gouzenko's apartment window is of Dundonald Park, a notorious gathering spot for drug addicts, and the apartment neighbours The Beer Store. I'm not so sure that in the present day Gouzenko would have been charmed by the constant stream of fent zombies and alcoholics loitering outside of his window.

Putin’s Russia is a a paradise contrasted with Canda so I don’t disagree with you.

I'm just left wondering what the marketing department thinks the recorded espionage attempt at roughly 1350 BC is. Perhaps something between Egyptians and their allies in the Amarna Letters?
Also, sounds far comfier than a freezing Siberian mudhut with mystery meat krokodil zombies.
