Why do some people accuse GDP per capita of being a 'meme metric', from what I understand it's quite solid if you are looking for a place to, well, have work opportunities.
>>
because a 10 million dollar watch is 10 million more gdp, but 1,000 minimum wage jobs are only 10,000 more dollars to the gdp
>>
>>18482357
sounds like a brown thirdie cope to me, probably brazilian or other latinx
>>
>>18482357
usually because they don't understand it

>because a 10 million dollar watch is 10 million more gdp,
so ? a 10 million dollar watch is something someone has to afford meaning stronger economy
>>
>>18482357
>some people
You mean faggots who shill dead ideology like communism/Nazism. They are the only ones who try and dismiss gdp because they know their system is a poorfag shitheap. So they substitute hard economic data with "muh vril" or "muh sovl" as if anyone who works a job and pays taxes actually gives a shit.
>>18482367
>because a 10 million dollar watch is 10 million more gdp
Holy fucking shit. You're stupid.

GDP per capita is a useful metric most of the time. It's only flawed when talking about tax havens like Ireland or the Cayman Islands.

One reason is that GDP per capita means average GDP, and averages are misleading for skewed distributions. To use your example with work opportunity, imagine two countries A and B. Country A has 100 jobs that all pay $20/hr and country B has 99 jobs that pay $10/hr and 1 job that pays $10000/hr. Country B has a much higher average wage, but you'll most likely make half as much money if you move there from country A.

Another reason is that GDP per capita tells you nothing about things like affordability. A Californian making $200k a year but living paycheck to paycheck is not necessarily living more comfortably than a rural Kansan making $30k a year but saving money every month.

And probably the most important reason is that some people (i.e. propagandists) want to conflate it with things like happiness or quality of life. Just because one country has more megabanks making millions of dollars a day playing internet poker doesn't mean that people on the street lead more fulfilling lives.

Even Denmark (the highest GDP per capita in Europe that's not a microstate/petrostate/tax haven) still has a lower GDP per capita than half of all 50 states, so bongs never really stood a chance.
>>
Why is Japan's GDP per capita so low.
>>
>>18483235
japan is not energy or resource independent so they are poor

There's a joke that encapsulates the problem with GDP:
>Two economists are walking in a forest when they come across a pile of shit. The first economist says to the other “I’ll pay you $100 to eat that pile of shit.” The second economist takes the $100 and eats the pile of shit.
>They continue walking until they come across a second pile of shit. The second economist turns to the first and says “I’ll pay you $100 to eat that pile of shit.” The first economist takes the $100 and eats a pile of shit.
>Walking a little more, the first economist looks at the second and says, "You know, I gave you $100 to eat shit, then you gave me back the same $100 to eat shit. I can't help but feel like we both just ate shit for nothing."
>"That's not true", responded the second economist. "We increased the GDP by $200!"
A high GDP is generally an indicator that a country is wealthy but you can really inflate or deflate the number of you really want to.

>I can't help but feel like we both just ate shit for nothing."
Not for nothing. They paid for the amusement of watching someone eat shit. Like two stand-up comedians who buy tickets for each other's show. People pay for services as well provide services. The only thing that feels counter intuitive about this is the example used but if you are smart enough to deconstruct it you'll realize it's normal.
>>
>>18483321
Sure but in real life the number of services and production is so large that likely due to the sheer scale of industries the vast majority are 'serious'.
>>
>>18483491
Yes, but my point is that you can reach a point where I think most people would argue that no real value is being created, it's just clever accounting to give a false impression regarding the strength of an economy. Two people in one of the poorest countries in the world with no access to food, housing, healthcare etc could theoretically generate trillions worth of GDP by repeatedly swapping their whole net worths back and forth in exchange for doing a stand-up routine that only lasts a millisecond. When is said and done at the end of the day they will still be poor as shit but on paper their country is now richer than the rest of the world combined due to a booming service sector.
>>
>>18482357
That was a good manga. Shoujo/josei romances are so much better than shounen/seinen because the guys are actually cool instead of being shy wimps.
>>
Because it’s an Americanism. Modern economics is fake and gay

>>18483561
the thing is nobody wastes their time in pointless transactions if a transaction happens it happened because both parties find value

A handful of Cobalt miners in the Congo earning $3 a day, raise the GDP of the Congo by a few hundred dollars a mknth.

An obese 6th grade reading level Barista in NYC supposedly contributes to thr City's gdp by thousands of dollars in the same time frame.

Which of the two is producing more value...
>>
>>18484137
The worthless faggots on this board won't reply to you sincerely. Another example of GDP is producing food to survive, who is worth more, the person literally producing all the food you need to survive when shtf and the boogaloo starts, or their lawyers and accountants and other worthless fictional numbers jobs? Pro democracy anons on this board are so so fucking stupid because once society collapses they will die and not because of some race war, they will simply die of hunger while screaming "but we had the highest gee dee peee!!!"

>government wants to increase GDP per capita because bigger = better
>gets rid of non-working age people by giving government suicide to old people
>gets rid of non-working age people by crushing the birthrate and relying on adult aged immigrants

Wow, number go up! Government good at economy!
>>
>>18484137
So what if instead of looking at monetary output, can we define a potential market value number. Would that fix the concept?
>>
>>18482357
Because the modern West has a problem of "GDP go up, living standards go down". Who cares if Musk or Bezos add extra billions of dollars to their names if you and your entire town are under an economic death spiral.
>>
>>18483154
but US GDP is health care and real estate, GDP is literally taking the fact that people can't afford homes and struggle in life pretending it says something positive about the country
life expectancy (for instance) is a much better metric. Or maybe you could compare the size of the productive economy, i.e. non-FIRE non-military GDP
>>
>>18483279
> Since many of the industrial policies initiated by METI, such as the nuclear fuel cycle program and the 5th generation computer program and software development program ("Sigma Plan"), have failed, the ministry is not highly regarded or trusted in Japan in the 21st century.[2] >

migrants lower gdp per capita tho
>>

Life expectancy in the US sucks because of obesity. Asians in the U.S are the least obese group and they have a life expectancy that surpasses both Japan and Singapore. Life expectancy is also not a flawless metric, Southern Europe has a higher average life expectancy but is significantly poorer than Northern Europe, Puerto Rico, Chile, Panama and Costa Rica all have higher life expectancies than the U.S despite being signifcantly poorer.
>>
>>18482357
there are no metrics for such things. you're trying to turn an is into an ought.
