What's the best retelling of this same general story?
>Random white man washes ashore
>Works his way up to become the local king's top guy, or the king himself

There are so many examples

>Among his alleged relationships was one with Badruddin, a Sarawakian prince, of whom he wrote, "my love for him was deeper than anyone I knew." This phrase led to some considering him to be either homosexual or bisexual

I mean there's this guy and Ventura but otherwise I don't recall this ever happening, more of a trope (the man who would be king and what such).
Actually not even those because Brooke was doing his exploits as a company man with extnesive company backing while Ventura was signed on as a general by the Sikhs who wanted to modernize. Neither were Castaways.

William Adams?
>>
Cabeza de Vaca washed up on the Texas coast along with other survivors from the Narvaez expedition, was taken up by locals and spent years wandering before making his way to Spanish settlements in Mexico, becoming renowned for his powers as a healer. So not a king but more the “white shaman” trope, and his account is one of the first written records of the American Southwest.

It's a better story than that OP.
>James Brookes gets bored working for the East India Company
>Persuades a bunch of his friends to buy in to his plan to set sail for one of the last unexplored (by Europeans) parts of the Earth
>They all sell basically everything they have to afford a shit tier boat and do exactly that
>When they get to Malaya they discover that the entire area is dominated by pirates and warlords
>Brookes decides that his small group of 20 something Brits are going to destroy all pirates in the area
>Because fuck pirates.
>Get the locals on side, wage a highly effective but largely amateur war on the pirate factions who have been dominating the area for centuries
>Fucking win
>Accept the title of 'Rajah of Sarawak' from the locals who absolutely love you for shutting down the pirates
>When the British Empire hears that another British adventurer has established a successful project they assume that he'll be quickly informing the government and accepting the job of Governor
>Tell the British Empire to fuck off - publicly affirm that the people under your protection will only join the empire if it's for their good, rather than the other way around.
>Threaten to fight the Royal Navy if they try to attack or otherwise endanger your people.
>Britain accepts that they probably wouldn't want to risk that you might be able to credibly follow through on that threat, and decide to leave you alone.
The man was either blessed, or so ridiculously talented that his skills were wasted by the East India Company.
