>people associate Rome with elegant, serious looking statues that look gray and minimalistic>it was actually painted slop and never intended to have that gray lookEven the rare things that don't suck in this world only don't suck by accident kek. The older I get the more I realize this.
Maturity is not giving the world a second glance. There is absolutely nothing worth considering or looking at.
nooo how can this be
anyone else read the Cracked article on this way back? oddly enough I think cracked led to me going to 4chan back in like 2009/10
>>18484872Based quote. That's why the wise man lives minimalistically and only looks inwardly. Those monks who live in caves or temples away from the world have a point.
>>18484867They made a ton of bronze statues tho
>>18484867Tbf those painted versions are reconstructions. The original painted versions might have been far better
>>18485198They definitely look more like they were painted by, or at least under strict direction of, autistic historians fixated on the idea of deriving an infallible reconstruction based on weathered traces of pigment than by actual artists taking what we know of the materials and style and credibly extrapolating what we don't.
>>18484867Ancient Greece and Rome would've probably looked as garish as those painted hindu temples
>>18485198>>18485214IIRC there have been cases of both progressive (celebrating) and non-progressive (criticising) academics claiming they were deliberately made garish and ugly under the belief they were epicly scaring le far right away from classics
The actual paint was complex and layered, but yeah it was very kitschy. And that's a good thing.
>>18484867they werent that garish. there are better reconstructions. these modern reconstructions making them look like this are liberals trying to own right-wingers.
>>18485233this is better but i doubt the blue eyes
>>18485232? Historians/archeologists only uncovered some base paint layers, ofc they were then shadowed and detailed like the sculpting.
>>18484867this is more accurate
>>18485238Athena had Blue-Gray eyes in the Illiad.
>>18485236Must be extenuating going thru life bending everything into your retarded ''muh left muh right, drumpf and libruls'' amerishart dualism
>>18485243This, I don't see where politics fit in all of this. The scientists can only get some base color paint layer out, then theres shading and other autism going on.
>>18485241This. The ugly versions in OP’s pic are just shitty reconstructions. The actual painted originals were far better looking.
>>18485236>liberalsyou mean the jews
>>18484867>>18484867We are never getting good Roman or Greek painted statues until a 40k autist starts 3d printing and painting these and posting them online, or maybe after an influencer campaign sadly-Hellenic polytheist that asks 40k people how to paint their statues.
>>18485243>>18485245sweating a little there, eh shlomo?
>>18485255I don't see what point you are trying to make. The sculpture remains, the paint goes away. Painting was as intense and polished as the sculpting, which the reconstructionists have trouble with.
>>18485259>jew detected
>>18485232>>18484867Shit like this is why western youths will go into a head shop and see some beautiful colorful and exotic Hindu or Buddhist painting and then think western polytheism is all either uptight right wing bullshit I genuinely hate it, these statues were made my ancient med people not uptight Victorian Anglos. Renaissance snobbery and Victorian bullbullshit have robbed Occidental kids of their heritage
>>18485241This is actually cool. I think I still like the bare marble look more. But it's close.
>>18484867>some fat lesbian said it was painted slop>she even admitted she was lying on purpose to 'own le chuds'Why did you make this thread op? Are you perhaps a brown manlet seething at the glory of Rome?
>>18485249It's not a shitty reconstruction. It's just than only the base paint layer left pigments. We do not know what the upper paint layers were like.
>>18485284That's the definition of a shitty reconstruction.
Can someone enlighten me how this is at all political? Yes, the ancient statues were colorful, I mean the medieval period was colorful as well. Europeans like color.
>>18485387Because non painted statues is the legacy of snobbish Renaissance people, Victorian and christian bullshitNot painting the statues and keeping temples as museums = dead religion Its propoganda we are soaked in
>>18485254That's kino btw. 40k People using their painting skills to make cool historical statues. That's a wholesome kino outcome. You understand that right?
>>18484867The statues were described as 'lifelike' and the coloring extraordinary. These reconstructions are pure garbage, just dropped a bucket on them and called it a day. Any modern reconstruction is garbage, with Caesar's alien head being the prime example.
>>18485387It's not the color that is the issue but rather the choice to only restore the base coat. It makes the statue look less technically perfect, more "naive", than when unpainted and lowers the art of the ancients.Personally I do not think the choice is politically motivated. The fashion in modern archeological reconstructions is towards minimalism and not attempting to guess the part that are missing.
>>18484867>paint...... LE BAD
>>18485505It's because period accurate paint reconstructions are expensive and difficult, and the museums dont wanna give the shekels.
>>18485505>>18485520If they're not going to do it right, then don't do it at all.
>>18485520it was simply acknowledged that painting classical art and architecture was cringe so even when colors were discovered (post Winkelmann) the great classical artists and architects kept things unpainted. It can be seen as the final evolution of classicism, nothing wrong with that.
