Few things can be as strange to each other as Islam is to Brits. When a Muslim preacher enters a sports stadium and begins blasting the Quran through the megaphone in Arabic, the looks on the faces of British spectators are as if they have seen a ghost, as if they have encountered something so strange that it can hardly be put into words. Likewise when a Muslim shows up with a megaphone in a school or a council hall. There's absolutely zero understanding of the Arabic being spoken. Mind you, it's being spoken and screamed into a speaker by a Pakistani, not an Arab.

Just about everything Muslims do is completely alien to Brits. It's not just alcohol and pork prohibitions, it's the dating/marriage requirements, restrictions on dogs and music, banter, slang, personal grooming, bathing habits, food even the way Muslims use the toilet and wash their feet is so foreign to Brits.

The average Brit has no idea who Muhammad is, what Muslims believe about Jesus. He has zero idea what Arabic is or Urdu.

Muslims hand out free Quran's to Brits and believe they are doing a great amazing deed, giving them a copy of this majestic world-renowned important book for completely free, yet Brits look puzzled and walk past as if it's something as meaningless as being handed another pizza shop pamphlet.

British converts to Islam are seen by other Brits as quite literally insane. Nobody sees a British man become Muslim and thinks it's something normal. For British people, if you want to become more religious you go to church or pick up a Bible. Islam never even enters their thought process. Few Brits even associate Islam with Arabs, they think it's a "Paki thing"

There appears to be absolutely nothing that Brits have even passively adopted or familiarised themselves with from their time spent governing the Muslim world. Islam and Muslim culture is still as strange to British people as it would be to the Sentinelese.

Why is this?

Why would Britons in Britain absorb knowledge through osmosis of colonial governors in Pakistan?

There’s long been a strain of Islamophilia in Britain, even if it was the romantic orientalist kind. In Elizabethan times there was a Moroccan delegation in London and they were exotic celebrities and one model for the “noble Moor” Othello, though that story came from an Italian source. Sir Richard Burton popularized the Arabian Nights and other tales from the Islamic world. Lawrence of Arabia was another example. Arabic words like “bint”—“girl” made their way into slang. It was different for the Brits being far from the Mediterranean front lines in the clash of civilizations, and different in the modern era to suddenly have millions of poor clannish immigrants flood your country, but through the empire and literature they had a long familiarity with Islam.
