How futuristic did the USSR feel at its peak? And why has no one been able to produce cooler aesthetics since?

But Soviet cities for most of the population were more like factories in the middle of nowhere with a significant number of people living in semi-wooden barracks well into the 1970s. (Also, often overlooked part of living conditions of poor people in big cities is having to dwell in literal basements up until mid-70s.)
